Care Coordination with Behavioral Specialists and Mental Health Providers
The majority of clients with ASD endorse at least one co-morbid mental health disorder. Despite this, children are often referred for ABA services without thought to their more complex presentation and the need for mental health support. In the reverse, clients with autism seek out help for mental health issues that are addressed by therapists without proper awareness of how autism impacts their treatment. Neuropsych, psych and behavioral assessments are often not used by receiving professionals to effectively inform treatment or to engender needed consultation. Multidisciplinary approaches improve quality of patient care and efficiency and increase providers confidence in their own efficacy. We will provide specific tools and examples for practitioners to increase their interest and confidence in using multidisciplinary teams.
